Movies of 2010

November 24th, 2009

The year of 2009 is almost over and one can look back and remember some great movies and of course some horrible ones as well (we will get nostalgic here on schmear.me as we approaches new year so keep your eyes out for “movies of 2009″ posts) :)

I want to look ahead and see what we can expect from 2010 and i also would like to see what movies you already know you want to see next year in the comment section!

Here are some of the movies i look forward to, in no apparent schmear order of course:

Bitch Slap (ok this one is a late 2009 movie i know but look at it as an transitional movie from 2009 to 2010 ;) )
Plot
“At its core, ‘Bitch Slap’ follows three bad girls (a down-and-out stripper, a drug-running killer and a corporate powerbroker) as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort massive booty from a ruthless underworld kingpin. Things quickly spi nout of control as allegiances change, truths are revealed, other criminals arrive for the score, the fate of the world hangs in the balance and they are forced to confront a villain much worse than they ever expected… themselves. It’s the ultimate morality tale as, one by one, they realize the whole “she-bang” was a set-up and one of the film’s characters may not even be human…”

The Crazies
Plot
“David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house…after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutten tries to make sense of what’s happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh…with insanity.”

The Wolfman
Plot
“Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate”

Alice in wonderland
Plot
“19-year-old Alice returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter”

The A-Team
Plot
“A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.”

Machete
Plot
“The highly skilled Federale Machete is hired by some unsavory types to assassinate a senator. But just as he’s about to take the shot, he notices someone aiming at him and realizes he’s been set up. He barely survives the sniper’s bullet, and is soon out for revenge on his former employers, with the reluctant assistance of his old friend Cheech Marin, who has become a priest and taken a vow of nonviolence. If you hire him to take out the bad guys, make sure the bad guys aren’t you!”

It’s gonna be another awesome year! :)

Another low-budget horror called Pesticide which i think can deliver some memorable scenes :) Plot: Giant insects are found in the sewers of NYC. One man, who is known for crying wolf has to tell his bosses who never take him serious. He puts his job and his love life on the line for the sake of the city! Only when they find his story to be true is it too late…or is it?

“Cheap” Blu-ray movies

March 4th, 2009

We all want the best quality possible when it comes to the movies we buy and 2009 you can’t get anything better than Blu-ray with it’s sweet high definition video and uncompressed multichannel audio. All this schmear do come at a price and i find myself questioning if a newly released movie on Blu-ray is worth 20+ euro.

Blu-ray logo

I usually buy movies from play.com but since the recession and the weakening of the swedish krona one might want to turn to domestic online shops.
Ginza for instance have 67 Blu-ray titles for 149 SEK (~13 euro) a piece. Granted it isn’t brand new titles but the price is right.

Here is the link to the campaign at Ginza – Blu-ray at ginza.se

Please post tips of good deals you have found on the internet in the comments!

Low grade gags or clever comedy

March 2nd, 2009

The past few weeks i have turned to some comedys to balance out the serious albeit excellent oscarnominated movies.

sexdriveFirst is the unrated version of Sean Anders movie Sex Drive wich on the paper is a typical “i’m a virgin and this is my only chance to f**k high school roadmovie” but it actually stood out from the rest. First of all i have to confess i haven’t watched the regular version so i can’t vouch for it but the unrated version was hilarious.

I wont go in to details but the one thing that made me appreciate Sex Drive was the character Lance (played by Clark Duke), his take on life is refreshing and he holds the rest of the cast together. Other noteworthy performances is delivered by James Marsden and Seth Green. Favourite scene has to be the one where Lance meets Seth Green’s character Ezekiel (an sarcastic amish guy) for the first time.

rolemodelsThe other comedy that turned out to be better than expected was Role Models starring Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott and Cristopher “McLovin” Mintz-Plasse.
Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott work really good together in this movie, Paul delivers his “sick of the world” sarcasm brilliantly and Sean plays the type of character we have seen him do many times before – a happy moron :)
“Mclovin” plays a dork who is seriously into live action roleplaying, to the point that he’s always wearing a cape.

The movie kept a good pace through out and i was never bored. The thing that made Role Models stand out from the crowd was that it actually had a sound message (wich never got too serious or sweet) – do what makes you happy, no matter what anyone els tells you.

To summarize… 2 great comedys that can be watched more than one time and delivers a fair amount quotes :)
I also felt it refreshing to watch a comedy that Seth Rogen didn’t star in, he’s a funny actor but for a while there it seemed he was in every comedy released.

Memorable schmear from Role Models
Gayle Sweeney: “Why don’t you lay out two lines of your selfishness, which is your blow, draw the shades, take the phone off the hook, grab a straw, and snort!”
