Awesome weekend movies

December 17th, 2009

Only one week left! So this weekend tips will be, yes you guessed it, Christmas movies! :D

nightmare_before_christmasFirst we have a classic that doesn’t really need any introduction. The Nightmare Before Christmas will always be one of the best Christmas movies, and that’s that! Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town stumbles upon Christmas Town. He falls for the idea of Christmas and tries to bring Christmas to Halloween Town. If you haven’t seen it, see it! If you have seen it, see it again!

Another Christmas movie that’s heartwarming is The Holiday.  Two women with guy-problems swap homes over the holiday. The cast includes Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. Adorable and warming story, perfect for a cold winters day.

And now for two Swedish movies that I love, I’m not sure if they have been released internationally but they’re worth looking for. First we have the classic Sällskapsresan 2 – Snowroller (Charter Trip 2 ). It doesn’t get more Swedish than this. Stig-Helmer and his friend Ole returns and this time for a skiing vacation in the Alps. It makes fun of everything with charter trips and the poor unlucky Stig-Helmer.

The number one comedy for Christmas is Tomten är far till alla barnen, I think it may be called ” In Bed with Santa” in English. It shows a modern (read complicated) famliy with exes, new wifes and girlfriends, all brought together for Christmas and the drama just gets worse the further into the night it gets. Sara, the host for this evening, reveals that she is pregnant, but what she doesn’t know is that her current husband is sterilized… Some of Swedens best actors in an hilarious movie that will surely brighten up your day.

That’s it for today, have a schmear Christmas everybody!tomten_ar_far_till_alla_barnenthe holidaysällskapsresan 2

Awesome weekend movies

December 10th, 2009

Only two weeks left now and the stress is definitely building up. Is there any better way to relax than to chill with a good movie?

27 Dresses (2008) was surprisingly good and entertaining.  The always a bridesmaid, never a bride Jane is probably the best friend a soon to be bride can have. But things get complicated when her sister Tess gets engaged with her secret love and boss George. At the same time a reporter looking for his big break turs his attention to Jane and well, it’s a chick flick to go figure. The cast includes Katherine Heigl , James Marsden , Edward Burns and Malin Åkerman. Cute, funny and entertaining, like most chick flicks but still one of the better in my eyes.

Eagle Eye (2008) also surprised me, in a good way. Two strangers gets thrown together by mysterious phonecalls on an action filled journey leading to Washington DC. Using everyday technology to track the ”actives” and control them is pretty cool and something we haven’t seen too much of, and the real story behind what this voice on the phone wants is keept a mystery pretty long into the movie. Just a lot of action and some cool effects makes Eagle Eye worth the time.

That’s it for now, have a great weekend!

Jerry Shaw, you have been schmeared. Your compliance is vital.

Awesome weekend movies

November 19th, 2009

And so the time we all love is almost here again – the weekend.  This weeks movie tips will be murder mystery classics. Well atleast one of them ;)
First we have a little scary murder mystery, Mindhunters. A group of FBI profilers are sent to an island over a weekend for a simulation but as it turns out, the simulation becomes real and they now have to figure out who the killer is before it’s their turn.. Every muder is specifically designed for every victim, and it becomes clear that the killer knows them a little to well.

I like Mindhunters because it has some turns that makes it a little difficult to figure out who the real serial killer is, and also not knowing who is next, or how.. This is one of the better movies by director Renny Harlin, who also directed Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2. The cast includes Val Kilmer, Jonny Lee Miller, Kathryn Morris and James Todd Smith aka LL Cool J.

MurderByDeathIf you feel more like a comedy then this next one is a classic that everyone has to see. Muder By Death brings together some of the biggest stars of the 70’s in a comedy where almost every line is a classic qoute.  A group of the best crimesolvers a invited for a weekend to solve a true mystery schmear murder. The whole thing is to determine who is the best at what they do. The cast includes Peter Sellers, David Niven, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell and Truman Capote. Muder By Death is hilarious, and this tagline from says it all: ”By the time the world’s greatest detectives figure out whodunnit… you could die laughing!”

No pulse, no heartbeat. If condition does not change, this man is dead.

Awesome weekend movies

November 13th, 2009

Ahh… the weekend is here at last and as usual the eternal questions arise – what movie to watch either before the partying or the day after.

First off we have a zombie horror/comedy from UK called Doghouse (2009). In this movie we follow a group of men who head to a remote village to help their friend Vince get over his nasty divorce. When they arrive at the village (called Moodley) they discover that all the women have been infected with some sort of experimental virus that has made them into zombies lusting for some fresh meat.

The cast which includes Danny Dyer and Stephen Graham manages to keep this movie at a good pace and delivers some funny lines and scenes. It contains some gore and a fair amount of blood but not over the top. Not as good as Shaun of the dead or Severance but still a nice flick!

If you’re not into the whole horrorthingy then perhaps this new classic will do the trick – JCVD (2008). In the film Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself, with a messy marital fight over custody of his child as well as tax problems. It has even reached the point where roles that were his are given to Steven Seagal (indeed a low point ;) ) . When visiting his old hometown he manages to get into more immediate trouble, as a hostage in a bankrobbery. The police outside think JCVD is the one robbing the bank and thus creates the tension in the film.

The difference between Van Damme’s all previous movies and this one is that he actually has to act here… and he delivers a really convincing and moving performance! Of course, being Van Damme we get a fair amount of  violence as well including one fantastic scene in the beginning of the movie.

“The female of the species is more deadly than the male.”

Awesome weekend movies

November 5th, 2009

Now here’s a new segment on Every Thursday we will post movietips for the weekend, everything from old, new, good and bad movies. Be sure to stay tuned for this!I have the honour to start this weekend. So here’s my tips this week.

First, if you didn’t get enough last weekend and still have a little bloodthirst, why not watch Doom.  The movie is based on the game with the same name, has some cool effects and just about as complicated story as one requiers after a long week. Archaeologists have found a protal to mars where some weird experiments goes wrong and monsters start slaying people. A team is sent to save the day but things don’t go as well as planned. It may not be the best movie in the world but I find it entertaining enough, and it is well worth watching just for the scenes at the end where it goes full fps-mode, very well done. Staring Karl Urban and Dwayne ”The Rock” Johnson it’s a pretty good movie if you just want to watch meaningless monsterkilling. I know I always somehow find it soothing and sleep like a baby after watching Doom.
If you on the other hand did get enough of all the blood and monsters last weekend my next tip might fit a bit better. The House Bunny, staring Anna Faris, is a cute and funny collegemovie, also not too complicated and pretty perfect for a nice quiet evening. Faris plays Shelley Darlingson who gets kicked out of the Playboy mansion and finds a new home at a sorority house, where she helps the unpopular girls of the ZETA house on their quest to save their house. With a cute lovestory, some funny moments and of course staring Hugh Hefner and the ”old” girls, Kendra, Holly and Bridget as themselfs it is well worth to watch.

So that’s my schmears for this weekend, hope you all will have a great weekend!
