Movie Review: 2012

Yesterday I went to see the the new and anticipated disaster movie 2012. And here is my review of the movie.

Story:

The movie and story begins in 2009 and we get to know one of the main character Adrian Helmsley (Chiwitel Ejiofor) an American geologist who travels to India to meet a colleague who has discovered something extraordinary. The discovery is that the  core temperature of the earth is increasing at a fast rate. Why that happened, you will have to read a other review or see the movie to understand cause I don´t want to spoil to much. Then the story jumps forward 3 years  under 10 minutes and we understand that some fishy (government?) guys seems to sell something very VERY expensive to very VERY rich people. Then the movie gets to the year of 2012 and it introduces the other main characters of the movie. Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) is a divorced sci-fi writer with two kids living with their mother and her new boyfriend. We get to know this family + 1 over the course of 30 minutes in the movie when Jackson is taking his kids out for a camping trip which goes bad when the lake they came to see is gone and instead they get taken away by military. When they are released again  we also get to know Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson) who is a kind of a weirdo and lives in his trailer, in the same national park that Jackson is camping in, sending out his probably illegal radio show talking about how the doomsday is near. And it appears Charlie knows more than meets the eye.  Anyhow, the movie now start to speed up and all hell break lose when the earths crust starts to shift. Now it is up to Jackson to save his family from this disaster and with a little help from Charlie Jackson he finds out that a extraction plan to save the human kind do exist and that he has to get him and his family there. And to get there he gets some help from his Russian Employer.

Visual impression

I guess I don´t have to say that this is one really expensive movie. But I will anyway. This is one really expensive movie! And it shows. The effects when the earth is starting to collapse is breathtaking. The ground cracking up everywhere and swallowing homes like the cookie monster. Skyscrapers tumbling down like a stack of cards. And all the time you can see how the people working or living in these building falls down and get smashed by debris.  This is for sure a movie best experienced at a cinema with a huge screen and with a proper surround system. Director Roland Emmerich is no stranger to these kinds of movies since he also been directing movies like Godzilla, Day after tomorrow, 10.000 BC and Independence Day. And all of these movies have somehow contributed to a established and standard way of how to shoot these kind of disaster movies. Don´t get me wrong the action scenes are great but is also what we are used to. The scenes around the action is kinda weak with some standard end-of-the-days-sentimental bits.

Cast

2012 has a couple of interesting names starring this movie. Except the earlier mentioned names also starring is amongst others Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt.  Danny does an ok performance as president Thomas Wilson. President in these kind of movies have a tendency to be kind of an imaginary picture of a real president and so is also the case in 2012.  But I have to say that with exception from Harrelsons performance as the paranoid Charlie, Oliver Platt was the one actor that my affected my emotions in this movie, he does it great as a “good” bad guy.

Summery

2012 is a big movie in many kinds of ways. It is expensive(1,5 billion Swedish kronors). It is long, 2h and 38 minutes. It has some of the best disaster/destruction scenes in history of movies. But that is also it. This is one of those movies you can gladly watch one time at the cinemas then get on with your life. Actually, when the first buildings started to fall apart I thought to myself that this is a movie I could watch again in HD when it comes out on Blue-Ray. But after another 2 hours I don´t think I would wanna watch the whole movie again just because of the really great effects. This is a ok movie and nothing more. I recommend you go see it in the cinemas and don´t bother wait for the disc version. Unless you have a really good home cinema.

Awesome weekend movies

November 13th, 2009

Ahh… the weekend is here at last and as usual the eternal questions arise – what movie to watch either before the partying or the day after.

Doghouse

First off we have a zombie horror/comedy from UK called Doghouse (2009). In this movie we follow a group of men who head to a remote village to help their friend Vince get over his nasty divorce. When they arrive at the village (called Moodley) they discover that all the women have been infected with some sort of experimental virus that has made them into zombies lusting for some fresh meat.

The cast which includes Danny Dyer and Stephen Graham manages to keep this movie at a good pace and delivers some funny lines and scenes. It contains some gore and a fair amount of blood but not over the top. Not as good as Shaun of the dead or Severance but still a nice flick!

If you’re not into the whole horrorthingy then perhaps this new classic will do the trick – JCVD (2008). In the film Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself, with a messy marital fight over custody of his child as well as tax problems. It has even reached the point where roles that were his are given to Steven Seagal (indeed a low point ;) ) . When visiting his old hometown he manages to get into more immediate trouble, as a hostage in a bankrobbery. The police outside think JCVD is the one robbing the bank and thus creates the tension in the film.

The difference between Van Damme’s all previous movies and this one is that he actually has to act here… and he delivers a really convincing and moving performance! Of course, being Van Damme we get a fair amount of  violence as well including one fantastic scene in the beginning of the movie.

Lie to me!

November 10th, 2009
Lie to Me

Lie to Me

Early this year the tv show Lie to Me had it’s premiere on Fox network, the show is about Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) and his company The Lightman Group. Cal is a human lie detector. He looks for dozens of subtle tells in the face and body language to see if someone is telling the truth. With this talent the lightman group help the police and other agency’s solve their cases.

The fact that we are not following someone working as a police officer or agent of some kind opens a lot of possibilities when it comes to diversity of the cases in the show.

Lie to Me is very well made but the one thing that really kept me wanting more is the performance Tim Roth delivers as Cal Lightman. Cal is obnoxious, devious and not very likable but that is what makes it so good. He is not working alone though, with him he got his business partner Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams), his prodigy Ria Torres (Monica Raymund) and Eli Loker (Brendan Hines) whom all delivers solid performances.

I found myself very intrigued by the “science” behind their skills of telling when someone is hiding something and i must admit that i have tried to watch out for these signs when speaking to people around me. :)

In Sweden season 1 of  the show has aired on TV400 and i think they have picked up season 2 as well (currently airing schmearing in usa).
If you have the chance to watch Lie to Me, give it a chance! It’s not mindblowingly awesome but it is a nice way to waste some time and as mentioned earlier Tim Roth really do deliver a very solid performance in this show.

sanctuary

And now to another wonderful sci-fi show (yes we do love sci-fi here at schmear.me). Sanctuary is a show for us sci-fi lovers that just keeps getting better and better with every episode. The Sanctuary is a global network of safehouses for abnormals (think monsters and other mythical creatures). Some are in need of protection and some needs to be locked up for our protection. Dr. Helen Magnus (played by Amanda Tapping from Stargate SG-1), her daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup),  Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), a forensic psychiatrist, and the others  has their hand full trying to track down abnormals to protect and study.  As one might suspect, there are people in the world with other plans for the abnormals.

The first season started a little slow but by the end of season one it was almost impossible to wait for the next episode, not to mention the next season. Season two started with a full on war between the Sanctuary and the Kabal (evil group set on world domination) and just keeps getting better. My favourite episode so far is easy “Pavor Nocturnus” (se02ep05). In this episode Magnus wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world where most of mankind has turned into cannibalistic monsters. Loved it!

What also sets Sanctuary apart from other schmears is the new techniques and technology they use. The series is shoot extensivley on green screen, with virtual sets and awesome visual effects. Sanctuary received a Primetime Emmy nomination this year for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series.

Sanctuary is a feast for sci-fi lovers and I’m sure others can enjoy it to. It’s always exciting and funny. Visit the shows website to learn more and most importantly watch Sanctuary! You won’t regret it!

All access pass to Spookville. Comes with a free lunch and a decoder ring.

The 82nd Academy awards are still months away but as you may or may not have seen the hosts has been announced. Next year the Oscars will be co-hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. This will be an interesting duo to watch. One could speculate that they needed two hosts to try and top Hugh Jackman from this schmear ;)

Awesome weekend movies

November 5th, 2009

Now here’s a new segment on schmear.me. Every Thursday we will post movietips for the weekend, everything from old, new, good and bad movies. Be sure to stay tuned for this!I have the honour to start this weekend. So here’s my tips this week.

First, if you didn’t get enough last weekend and still have a little bloodthirst, why not watch Doom.  The movie is based on the game with the same name, has some cool effects and just about as complicated story as one requiers after a long week. Archaeologists have found a protal to mars where some weird experiments goes wrong and monsters start slaying people. A team is sent to save the day but things don’t go as well as planned. It may not be the best movie in the world but I find it entertaining enough, and it is well worth watching just for the scenes at the end where it goes full fps-mode, very well done. Staring Karl Urban and Dwayne ”The Rock” Johnson it’s a pretty good movie if you just want to watch meaningless monsterkilling. I know I always somehow find it soothing and sleep like a baby after watching Doom.

If you on the other hand did get enough of all the blood and monsters last weekend my next tip might fit a bit better. The House Bunny, staring Anna Faris, is a cute and funny collegemovie, also not too complicated and pretty perfect for a nice quiet evening. Faris plays Shelley Darlingson who gets kicked out of the Playboy mansion and finds a new home at a sorority house, where she helps the unpopular girls of the ZETA house on their quest to save their house. With a cute lovestory, some funny moments and of course staring Hugh Hefner and the ”old” girls, Kendra, Holly and Bridget as themselfs it is well worth to watch.

So that’s my schmears for this weekend, hope you all will have a great weekend!

V 2009

November 4th, 2009
V 2009

V 2009

The first episode of the remake of the classic scifi serie V aired last night and here are my first impressions.
(Beware of some possible spoilers below, especially if you haven’t seen the original.)

I am a big fan of the 1983 classic scifi serie V so my first thought when i saw the announcement for the remake was “oh no, are they really gonna slaughter this fantastic show with a remake”. Needless to say, it was with great skepticism i started to watch the pilot of V 2009.

The storyline is true to the original mini series and i must admit i found myself interested almost from the beginning. The buildup before the arrival of the motherships was quite good and i liked the fact that they choose not to show the whole ships (you could see parts of the ships in reflections in buildings etc.) in the beginning, it added nicely to the suspense.
One of the best things in the original series was the suspense and the feeling that something was not right from the beginning and i think that they managed to capture that in the remake as well (so far), creds in this regard goes to Morena Baccarin (Stargate, Firefly…) as the visitors supreme commander Anna.

You’ll see some other familiar actors/actresses among the cast – Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), Scott Wolf (Everwood, The nine) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) to name a few. The acting was ok overall and i do hope they will let the different characters develop during the series.

This brings me to what i hope this series will be. First i really hope they resist the urge to make this into an actionpacked show with nothing more than over the top effects because there is much more interesting topics to exploit – the political game, cultural clashes, a society divided etc. This was what made for example the remake of Battlestar Galactica so fracking good :)

As with all tv series one have to watch a couple of episodes to actually get a feel for it and i will continue to watch V 2009, hoping for something great.

On a sidenote, i just love the geeky references in the original show like for instance in the scene when the alien workers lands outside the NY plant and the band plays the theme from Star Wars :D

What’s funny about Cylon-toast?

November 3rd, 2009

Hey all you schmearers out there! Glad to be back in action. Hopefully everyone got their fair share of scarymovies this past weekend. I know I did, so that’s a subject I’ll ignore for now. I thought I’d make a gentle start to this fall with just a shout-out to one of my favourite schmears.

By now I guess noone has missed one of the funniest shows on TV, but just to make sure here’s a shout-out to The Big Bang Theory. The show is now in it’s third season and still funny as hell.  It’s a sitcom that can make everybody laugh. The quick humour, combining intelligence with geek-talk is surely a hit and the characters are just so darn loveable one just can’t get enough of them.

It’s not surprising it recived three Emmy-nominations this year. I for one would have liked to see Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper) win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, but there’s always next year. And I’m sure The Big Bang Theory will be nominated again (seriously, haven’t 30 Rock had their share now;) ) Hopefully this show will be around for many, many more seasons!

You have about as much chance of going out with Penny as the Hubble Telescope has of finding that at the center of each black hole there’s a little man with a flashlight trying to find the circuit breaker.
