Awesome weekend movies

December 17th, 2009

Only one week left! So this weekend tips will be, yes you guessed it, Christmas movies! :D

nightmare_before_christmasFirst we have a classic that doesn’t really need any introduction. The Nightmare Before Christmas will always be one of the best Christmas movies, and that’s that! Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town stumbles upon Christmas Town. He falls for the idea of Christmas and tries to bring Christmas to Halloween Town. If you haven’t seen it, see it! If you have seen it, see it again!

Another Christmas movie that’s heartwarming is The Holiday.  Two women with guy-problems swap homes over the holiday. The cast includes Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. Adorable and warming story, perfect for a cold winters day.

And now for two Swedish movies that I love, I’m not sure if they have been released internationally but they’re worth looking for. First we have the classic Sällskapsresan 2 – Snowroller (Charter Trip 2 ). It doesn’t get more Swedish than this. Stig-Helmer and his friend Ole returns and this time for a skiing vacation in the Alps. It makes fun of everything with charter trips and the poor unlucky Stig-Helmer.

The number one comedy for Christmas is Tomten är far till alla barnen, I think it may be called ” In Bed with Santa” in English. It shows a modern (read complicated) famliy with exes, new wifes and girlfriends, all brought together for Christmas and the drama just gets worse the further into the night it gets. Sara, the host for this evening, reveals that she is pregnant, but what she doesn’t know is that her current husband is sterilized… Some of Swedens best actors in an hilarious movie that will surely brighten up your day.

That’s it for today, have a schmear Christmas everybody!tomten_ar_far_till_alla_barnenthe holidaysällskapsresan 2

Singing in the holidays

December 15th, 2009

Christmas is getting closer and closer and now we even have lots and lots of snow. Perfect conditions for us moviegeeks :) Christmas is also the theme for most series now, so far Bones has the best one this year. Spoiler alert! Only Bones can blow up Santa and strip Booth and still get away with a hell of an episode. This is a good time to catch up with the series one has missed during the year or go for a rerun. So today I thought I’d give a TV-series tips for the holidays.

Glee is a series I’ve fallen in love with the last couple of weeks. I didn’t know that much about it when it started airing on TV4 in Sweden some time ago, but decided to give the pilot a chance. And well, I’ve been stuck ever since. It’s no question why this show has gotten so successful, mixing humour and music it makes you happy every week. Glee is in no way like, let’s say High School Musical. Yes the series is about a glee club and there’s a lot of singing and dancing but they’ve tuned it down and made it more schmear realistic in a way without losing the charm.

In essence Glee is about a Spanish teacher who takes over the schools glee club and tries to return it to it’s former glory. However the schools cheerleading coach doesn’t like to share the spotlight and tries to stop them. Several funny and adorable characters and some complicated relationships makes this show the feel-good series of the year. What really got me to become a gleek was the humour and the somewhat unexpected funny dialogues. Just check out this clip (not so good quality) and give Glee a chance, even if you don’t usually like musicals. Season one will be out on DVD soon and until then you can catch it on TV4 in Sweden every Thursday at 21.00.

I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night I will steal away into your home and punch you in the face!

Awesome weekend movies

December 10th, 2009

Only two weeks left now and the stress is definitely building up. Is there any better way to relax than to chill with a good movie?

27 Dresses (2008) was surprisingly good and entertaining.  The always a bridesmaid, never a bride Jane is probably the best friend a soon to be bride can have. But things get complicated when her sister Tess gets engaged with her secret love and boss George. At the same time a reporter looking for his big break turs his attention to Jane and well, it’s a chick flick to go figure. The cast includes Katherine Heigl , James Marsden , Edward Burns and Malin Åkerman. Cute, funny and entertaining, like most chick flicks but still one of the better in my eyes.

Eagle Eye (2008) also surprised me, in a good way. Two strangers gets thrown together by mysterious phonecalls on an action filled journey leading to Washington DC. Using everyday technology to track the ”actives” and control them is pretty cool and something we haven’t seen too much of, and the real story behind what this voice on the phone wants is keept a mystery pretty long into the movie. Just a lot of action and some cool effects makes Eagle Eye worth the time.

That’s it for now, have a great weekend!

Jerry Shaw, you have been schmeared. Your compliance is vital.

Schmear Christmas movies

November 29th, 2009

Christmas is around the corner and it’s time to start decorate, bake and find gifts. To get into the mood and that christmas cheer this time of year we thought we’d give you all some Christmas themed movie and series tips to either watch or give away.

topgearwinterMy first suggestion is the Winter Olympics episode of Top Gear (se07ep07). This may not have so much to do with Christmas but with the Winter Olympics comming up in the spring I thought this might fit anyways. In this episode Clarkson, Hammond and May travel to Lillehammer in Norway and take on their own version of the Winter Olympics. Just as entertaining and ambitious as always.

love_actuallyIf you feel more like a cosy movie to watch under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate, Love Actually is the movie for you! A mix of all types of love stories set in London during Christmas, with some of the best British actors/actresses this is an instans classic that’s just as sweet everytime.

Look out for more Christmas tips here on

All I want for Christmas is schmear!

Awesome weekend movies

November 19th, 2009

And so the time we all love is almost here again – the weekend.  This weeks movie tips will be murder mystery classics. Well atleast one of them ;)
First we have a little scary murder mystery, Mindhunters. A group of FBI profilers are sent to an island over a weekend for a simulation but as it turns out, the simulation becomes real and they now have to figure out who the killer is before it’s their turn.. Every muder is specifically designed for every victim, and it becomes clear that the killer knows them a little to well.

I like Mindhunters because it has some turns that makes it a little difficult to figure out who the real serial killer is, and also not knowing who is next, or how.. This is one of the better movies by director Renny Harlin, who also directed Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2. The cast includes Val Kilmer, Jonny Lee Miller, Kathryn Morris and James Todd Smith aka LL Cool J.

MurderByDeathIf you feel more like a comedy then this next one is a classic that everyone has to see. Muder By Death brings together some of the biggest stars of the 70’s in a comedy where almost every line is a classic qoute.  A group of the best crimesolvers a invited for a weekend to solve a true mystery schmear murder. The whole thing is to determine who is the best at what they do. The cast includes Peter Sellers, David Niven, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell and Truman Capote. Muder By Death is hilarious, and this tagline from says it all: ”By the time the world’s greatest detectives figure out whodunnit… you could die laughing!”

No pulse, no heartbeat. If condition does not change, this man is dead.

Updates – Joss Whedon cursed?

November 17th, 2009

dollhouseI’m sure about it now, Joss Whedon is cursed! There is no other answer to why his shows, brilliant as they are, keep getting cancelled. Dollhouse has now fallen to the same fate as Firefly :( . We all knew this day was comming but it still sucks. But please don’t stop trying Mr Whedon. All the episodes of season two will air, with the season finale working as a series finale. On the bright side, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now airing in Sweden again on TV400, two episodes every weekday after 16.25. And you can still catch Dollhouse on TV400 Saturdays at 20.00. TV4 Science fiction has started airing Babylon 5 again weekdays at 17.05, and starting today at 20.15 they’re bringing back Star Trek Enterprise! And don’t miss Star Trek Original Series, weekdays at 18.35.

In other news, the long wait is over.  Star Trek is now out on DVD and Blu-ray! And in a couple of days so will Terminator Salvation. So now we geeks can all fill the dark November afternoons with bonus material and re-watch these awesome schmears.

Take your Vulcan cynicism and bury it with your repressed emotions.

Even things that go bump in the night needs protection

November 9th, 2009

And now to another wonderful sci-fi show (yes we do love sci-fi here at Sanctuary is a show for us sci-fi lovers that just keeps getting better and better with every episode. The Sanctuary is a global network of safehouses for abnormals (think monsters and other mythical creatures). Some are in need of protection and some needs to be locked up for our protection. Dr. Helen Magnus (played by Amanda Tapping from Stargate SG-1), her daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup),  Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), a forensic psychiatrist, and the others  has their hand full trying to track down abnormals to protect and study.  As one might suspect, there are people in the world with other plans for the abnormals.

The first season started a little slow but by the end of season one it was almost impossible to wait for the next episode, not to mention the next season. Season two started with a full on war between the Sanctuary and the Kabal (evil group set on world domination) and just keeps getting better. My favourite episode so far is easy “Pavor Nocturnus” (se02ep05). In this episode Magnus wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world where most of mankind has turned into cannibalistic monsters. Loved it!

What also sets Sanctuary apart from other schmears is the new techniques and technology they use. The series is shoot extensivley on green screen, with virtual sets and awesome visual effects. Sanctuary received a Primetime Emmy nomination this year for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series.

Sanctuary is a feast for sci-fi lovers and I’m sure others can enjoy it to. It’s always exciting and funny. Visit the shows website to learn more and most importantly watch Sanctuary! You won’t regret it!

All access pass to Spookville. Comes with a free lunch and a decoder ring.

Oscar watch

November 6th, 2009

The 82nd Academy awards are still months away but as you may or may not have seen the hosts has been announced. Next year the Oscars will be co-hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. This will be an interesting duo to watch. One could speculate that they needed two hosts to try and top Hugh Jackman from this schmear ;)
