Calibrating Infocus IN82

March 22nd, 2009

Ok so i had some time to spare and decided to finetune the calibration of my new projector Infocus IN82.

The “software” i used was mainly the Digital Video Essentials HD version.

Fortunately the colors are almost perfect out of the box and since i can darken the room i was able to close the iris almost entirely which allows me to get very nice black details while still maintaining the single chip dlp punch!

The settings:
Keystone: Off
Image Shift: Off
Contrast: 45
Brightness: 54
Color: 50
Tint: 50
BrilliantColor: Off
Gamma: Film
Overscan: Off
Iris: 32
Flesh Tone Correction: 0
Film Mode: On
Sharpness: Standard
Color Space: Auto
Color Temperature: 6500K
Color Gamut: Auto
Color Control:
Red gain 46, Green gain 47, Blue gain 50
Red offset 51, Green offset 48, Blue offset 50
Noise Reduction: Off
High Power: Off

Here are some schmears i took (it doesn’t do the projector justice, but still)

Trailers, nominations and whatnot

March 17th, 2009

Alright, first we have a couple of trailers that at least i have been waiting for! ( Surprise, the genre is horror ;) )

Sam Raimi’s new project called Drag Me to Hell starring Justin Long and Alison Lohman. Plot: A loan officer (Lohman) ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, who turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.

A new low-budget scifi/horror called Rat Scratch Fever with an awsome plot: Brought back from space, an army of giant, mutant rats causes death and destruction for Los Angeles and the world.

Another low-budget horror called Pesticide which i think can deliver some memorable scenes :) Plot: Giant insects are found in the sewers of NYC. One man, who is known for crying wolf has to tell his bosses who never take him serious. He puts his job and his love life on the line for the sake of the city! Only when they find his story to be true is it too late…or is it?

Not long ago The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films released the nominations for the 35th Annual Saturn Awards. The ceremony will take place June 25.

dollhouse-cast-photo-whedonAfter a few episodes it’s time to review Joss Whedon’s newest creation Dollhouse. The series follows Echo (Eliza Dushku, played Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel), an active at the dollhouse, a place where dreams and fantasies come true. The idea is that these actives as they are called are ”blank slates” and can be inprinted with what ever personality and qualities the client wants. After the mission/engagement is over all their memories along with the personality is erased.

The storyline follows Echo on her missions but also the people running the dollhouse and the backstory that’s been unraveling in the first episodes about the active Alfa, an active gone wrong. We’ve also seen the cop Paul Ballard, who tries to find the dollhouse even though noone thinks it exists. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll stop there.

Like most of Whedon’s creations he has created many exciting storylines weaved together to an addictive series. Being a Firefly-fan I hade high hopes for Dollhouse and so far I like it. Following the many storylines and a new mission in every episode the series has all the potential to keep up the interest of the viewer for at least a couple of seasons. And like many sci-fi series there have allready been some familiar faces. Paul Ballard is played by Tahmoh Penikett, also known as Helo from Battlestar Galactica, there’s Reed Diamond who played Jack Vasser (the brother) in Journeyman and in episode four (”Gray Hour”) we could see Tony Amendola, Master Bra’tac in Stargate SG-1 and so on.

I like Joss Whedon’s way to tell a story and so far the actors in Dollhouse have done a great job making this series one of the most promising sci-fi shows out there today. I’m hocked on Dollshouse and hope that it doesn’t get cancelled like Firefly (if you haven’t seen Firefly, do it now!). So far I would give it a 7/10, definitely a series worth watching!

Tonight another new series premiers, Castel, with the brilliant Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal Reynolds from Firefly). Check it out and there will be a review up here on shortly.

Take my love, take my land, Take me where I cannot stand, I don’t care, I’m still free, You can’t take the schmear from me :D

A machete for your jungle of remotes!

March 6th, 2009

Do you also have My remotesa remote for just about anything in your home? Tired of switching off the light in the hall when you really wanted to change the channel on the TV? Well here is the solution for you! The Harmony 1100 remote. This little beauty right here is the latest model in Logitechs Harmony family. It comes with a 3.5 inch color touchscreen and it has a gazillion setup options. So if you are one of those people who just want your stuff to work properly right out of the box, this is not the gadget for you! The one thing that made me all gitty about both the 1100 and 1000Harmony 1100 model is that you can customize the remote to do many things by one push at the screen instead of having to push just as much buttons as you would with all your regular controls. You can program the Harmony to execute a series of action and then assign them to a icon on the touchscreen. This is done on your computer with the included software for the remote.

Picture the following scenario: You come home from a hard day at work/school. You just want to throw that microwave dinner in the micro and put on a movie you´ve been longing for all day. You wait for the meatballs to thaw in the microwave then you sit down in your sofa. You see all your remotes and start to reach for the TV-remote while, in your head, you are planing the sequence in which you first have to turn on the TV/projector then the DVD/Blue-ray player then dim the lights. But just as you are about to grab the remote you see your brand new Harmony 1100 lying on the table. You press the icon for watching a DVD on the touchscreen and Schmear! your DVD starts to buzz, the projector comes to life with a fuzz and your lights turn down low. All with one press of a finger.

Sweet right!? Did I mention that the remote can feel when it gets picked up and turns itself on because of the built-in motionsensors. And when you put it down again it turns it self off  to save battery.

Oh yeah the price tag is about $500 (376 euro) so  maybe I will keep my 7 remotes anyheuw. *schmear*

Some new trailers to check out

March 6th, 2009

star-trekNow there is a new trailer out for the new Star Trek movie opening on May 8th, and WOW! I for one can’t wait for it and think it’s about time they give us more Star Trek. It’s been too long since Enterprise was schmeared cancelled.

Watch the third trailer here

Another new trailer recently came out for Pubilc Enemies, the new movie based on the true story of the notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. This era in the American history is one of the most exhiting and stylish (according to me, who doesn’t love those hats?) of them all, and let’s face it, neither Depp nor Bale have never let us down before. Looking forward to July 1st!

Keep the good schmear coming!

Review of an Oldie and a Newie

March 6th, 2009

About a week ago I bought the German Jeepers Creepers 1&2 4 DVD Deluxe Edition. Got it for a nice price on and I had only seen the second part. So a few days ago I watched Jeepers Creepers 1, and here are my thoughts about the movie.

First of I just want to add to the record that I love scary movies, even though they give me nightmares. There something about getting that strange shivering all through your body when you watch a horror movie  on the projector in a dark room. And this movie did just that. Strange? Well I thought so to. The movie itself is not the best nor the scariest horror movie i´ve seen but for some reason this movie gave me that shiver.

The plot is about a sister and her brother driving home for spring break. But on their way home they see a mysterious figure dump, what looks like bodies, down a pipe near a church in the middle of nowhere. They keep driving but after a short while the mystic figure rams them of the road with his truck. When they get back on the road again they just have to investigate the pipe and look if it really was bodies or something else. Guess which one it is? Then they try to outrun this mysterious figure throughout the rest of the movie but he has got them in his scent so to speak.

This is an average horror movie in lack of better options and gets 5/10 from me.

And now to the newie.

Splinter is your ordinary “The thing” wannabe movie, a parasite infects people and that leads to bloodshed, bloodshed and more bloodshed. You have all the usual ingredients for making a creature feature movie. A young couple going camping, a strange hitchhiking couple and a 400 year old forest.

This movie consist of some really gruesome shoot and the editor David Michael Maurer have to get credit for making the “Creature” look pretty decent on the screen with such a low budget and a not so good  effect studio creating the creature itself.

Anyheuw this movie is overall above your average creature feature movie released nowadays and get 6/10.

“Cheap” Blu-ray movies

March 4th, 2009

We all want the best quality possible when it comes to the movies we buy and 2009 you can’t get anything better than Blu-ray with it’s sweet high definition video and uncompressed multichannel audio. All this schmear do come at a price and i find myself questioning if a newly released movie on Blu-ray is worth 20+ euro.

Blu-ray logo

I usually buy movies from but since the recession and the weakening of the swedish krona one might want to turn to domestic online shops.
Ginza for instance have 67 Blu-ray titles for 149 SEK (~13 euro) a piece. Granted it isn’t brand new titles but the price is right.

Here is the link to the campaign at Ginza – Blu-ray at

Please post tips of good deals you have found on the internet in the comments!
